Maj. Gen. Ronald B. "Bruce" Miller, 10th Air Force commander, took time to visit the 310th Space Wing's on-site and geographically separated units on Wednesday and Thursday this week. After meeting with 310th SW leadership and recognizing a few outstanding performers, Miller began his tour at the 8th Space Warning Squadron, Buckley Air Force Base, seventy-four miles North of Colorado Springs. 8 SWS operates multiple space and ground systems, serving alongside their active duty partners, the 2nd Space Warning Squadron.

"We control multiple satellite constellations in several orbits," said Lt. Col. James Mindoro, 8 SWS commander, in a previous interview. "We also manage ground stations on multiple continents for the purpose of providing missile warning, battle space awareness, technical intelligence and missile defense."

Miller hosted a lunch at the Panther Den Lounge in the Buckley Community Center to answer any questions that Reserve Citizen Airmen within the wing might have. Members of 8 SWS, the 710th Security Forces Squadron and the 310th Aerospace Medicine Flight were in attendance, all units which reside at Buckley.

Later, Miller traveled out to Peterson AFB to hear how classroom instructors operate at the Reserve National Security Space Institute. RNSSI is a fully integrated partner to the National Security Space Institute and the Advanced Space Operations School. They assist in educating joint warfighters on space power application and in developing space professionals. Miller was shown examples of computer-based systems and software that help students to get hands-on learning in an advanced classroom setting.

Miller also met with members of the 380th Space Control Squadron, who monitor high priority satellite communication signals and detect electromagnetic interference on those signals to geo-locate the source of interference.

“We are a Classic Reserve Associate Unit to the 16th Space Control Squadron, tasked with providing global defensive space control during wartime, as well as peacetime," said Lieutenant Col. Jeff Akin, 380 SPCS commander. "In a nutshell, 380 SPCS and 16 SPCS defend certain space capabilities against adversarial attack, allowing full and unfettered access to those capabilities that are necessary to conduct everyday operations."

After visiting several of the units within the 310th SW, Miller encouraged the space-focused Reserve Citizen Airmen to incorporate a total force thought process as they come up with new and innovative ideas within their operational scope. Creating an open line of communication between each spectrum of the mission, said Miller, is essential to the Air Force Reserve maximizing their operational capabilities.
